Peñíscola is world famous for its imposing Templar castle and its past as the residence of Pope Luna. However, beyond these iconic monuments, the city hides a fascinating history that often goes unnoticed. Today we invite you to discover some of the lesser-known corners and stories that have marked the future of this Mediterranean enclave.
1. The Old Fishermen’s Refuges
Before becoming a renowned tourist destination, Peñíscola was for centuries a fishing village. In the narrow streets of the old town you can still see some of the old whitewashed houses where the sailors lived, with small doors and windows designed to resist the strong sea wind. These homes witnessed a hard life, marked by the struggle against the sea and waiting for loved ones who went out to sea.
2. The Wall that Resisted the Pirates
Throughout history, Peñíscola has been the target of pirates and corsairs who stalked the Mediterranean coast. To protect the city, its inhabitants reinforced the walls and created ingenious defence systems. One of the most curious of these is the so-called ‘Portal de Sant Pere’, which served as a strategic access to the port and could be quickly blocked in the event of an attack.
3. Pope Luna and his Last Library
During his exile in Peñíscola, Pope Benedict XIII, known as Pope Luna, assembled one of the most important libraries of his time. Its books and documents were of great value, as they included theological treatises, legal writings and scientific knowledge of the time. After his death, much of this collection was dispersed, and some of its volumes ended up in important European libraries. To this day, his intellectual legacy remains a source of study and admiration.
4. The Secret Passage to the Sea
It is said that beneath the castle of Peñíscola there is an underground passage that connects directly to the sea. According to some accounts, this tunnel would have served to supply the fortress with provisions during sieges and as a possible escape route in case of need. Although its actual existence remains a legend, the idea of a hidden passageway continues to fascinate lovers of history and adventure.
5. The Templars and the Holy Grail
One of the most intriguing legends suggests that the Templars may have hidden the Holy Grail in Peñíscola. Although there is no historical evidence to confirm this, the connection between the Templars and the Crown of Aragon, as well as the presence of Pope Luna in the castle, have fuelled this theory. It is said that the castle would have been an ideal refuge to protect sacred relics, and some people have linked its architecture to possible esoteric symbols associated with the Templar order. However, this remains a story shrouded in mystery and speculation.
