Travelling to Peñíscola with your family is one of those experiences that you can enjoy without any effort. The city combines safe beaches, places steeped in history and a peaceful atmosphere where children can run around freely. What’s more, there are lots of activities designed especially for them, both in the city centre and the surrounding area.
Playa Norte is the best known and perfect for children. Its fine sand, flat access and shallow water make it very comfortable for families. In addition, during the high season it has all the amenities: showers, lifeguards, play areas and beach bars nearby.
If you prefer something quieter, Playa Sur or some of the small coves in the Sierra de Irta offer a more natural environment, ideal for exploring with the little ones and showing them the wilder side of the Mediterranean.
Walking through the streets of Peñíscola’s old town is like stepping into a fairy tale. Children usually love getting lost among the walls, climbing up to Pope Luna’s castle and discovering the views from the top. What’s more, the route can be easily covered on foot and there are lots of ice cream parlours and small shops to make your stops even more enjoyable.
The Peñíscola tourist train is a perfect option for exploring the city without getting tired. It passes along the seafront promenade, the harbour and the old town, and children usually find it fascinating.
You can also take a stroll around the fishing port, where at certain times of day you can watch the boats arrive and unload the catch of the day. It’s a simple but very authentic experience.
If you fancy a short trip, the Serra d’Irta Natural Park is ideal for enjoying with the family. There are easy, well-marked trails, perfect for walking among pine trees, the sea and cliffs.
Another highly recommended option is the Marjal de Peñíscola, a protected natural area with wooden walkways, lagoons and viewpoints. It is accessible, peaceful and perfect for bird watching without leaving the urban environment.
Just a few minutes’ drive away, between Benicarló and Peñíscola, you can visit the Jardín del Papagayo, a park with exotic birds and other animals where children can interact with them in a controlled manner.
Also nearby, the Polinesia Magic World Water Park in Oropesa can be a good day trip if you are looking for something more dynamic, with water slides and themed activities.
Peñíscola also invites you to relax. A sunset stroll along the seafront promenade, a stop for ice cream or an early dinner by the sea are simple plans that always work. The city maintains a family-friendly atmosphere throughout the year, making it an ideal destination for those travelling with young children.
Peñíscola is a destination designed for uncomplicated enjoyment. With its beaches, history and natural spaces, it offers a perfect balance between relaxation and fun. Whether it’s your first visit or you already know the city, there’s always something new to share with your family in front of the Mediterranean.
