Surrounding Pe\u00f1\u00edscola are two natural environments of special interest: the Serra d’Irta and the Marjal de Pe\u00f1\u00edscola. Both areas offer rich and authentic biodiversity, perfect for those who want to connect with the landscape and local wildlife.<\/p>

1. Serra d\u2019Irta \u2013 Unspoilt Mediterranean nature<\/strong><\/h4>

Declared a Natural Park and Marine Reserve in 2002, the Serra d’Irta covers around 7,743 hectares of land and 2,448 hectares of sea, embracing more than 12 km of practically untouched coastline.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Flora:<\/strong><\/p>

  • Dense coastal scrubland<\/strong> dominated by the European fan palm<\/strong> (Chamaerops humilis<\/em>)<\/strong>, the only palm tree native to Europe.<\/p><\/li>

  • Extensive formations of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis<\/em>)<\/strong> accompanied by mastic (Pistacia lentiscus<\/em>)<\/strong>, kermes oak (Quercus coccifera<\/em>)<\/strong> and blackthorn (Rhamnus lycioides<\/em>).<\/li>
  • Highly valuable botanical micro-reserves: Erodium sanguis-christi<\/strong> grows in Cala Argilaga, Limonium perplexum<\/strong> (endemic to the area) grows in Torre Badum, and Pancratium maritimum<\/strong>, or sea daffodil, grows in the Pebret dune.<\/li>

    Fauna:<\/strong><\/p>

    • The great diversity of birds<\/strong> is noteworthy, especially in the scrubland: warblers (Sylvia<\/em> spp.), birds of prey such as Bonelli’s eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus)<\/strong>, the common kestrel<\/strong>, the buzzard<\/strong> and the short-toed eagle<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li>

    • Vulnerable species such as Audouin’s gull (Larus audouinii)<\/strong> and great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)<\/strong> are found in the coastal environment.<\/li>
    • Common mammals in the Mediterranean area: red squirrel<\/strong>, wild boar<\/strong>, fox<\/strong>, genet<\/strong> and badger<\/strong>.<\/li>

        • Endemic freshwater fish species: the samaruc (Valencia hispanica)<\/strong> and the fartet (Aphanius iberus)<\/strong>, protected by recovery programmes due to their high degree of threat.<\/li>
